Safer, Smarter Construction: CIRAS and EDA Mini Grants at Work

Two recent projects, funded by CIRAS and EDA mini grants, are helping Iowa construction companies explore practical applications of digital innovation. With the help of Iowa State University faculty, these efforts aim to reduce risk, improve efficiency, and make job sites safer.

Digital As-Builts – Software & Hardware Basics
Led by Dr. Behrouz Shafei, this project examined how drones, 3D scanners, and modeling software can streamline documentation and planning in construction. Digital as-builts capture what’s actually constructed, enhancing the accuracy, workflow, and asset management of the field. Watch the As-Builts Webinar

Enhancing Construction Safety with VR and AI
In another mini-grant project, Dr. Leah Mo used artificial intelligence to analyze more than 260 real-world accident reports. Her team translated these findings into immersive, VR-based safety training, using 360° imaging to simulate real hazards and improve engagement. Watch the VR Safety Webinar

Both projects reflect how CIRAS supports Iowa companies with an initial complimentary technology assessment and hands-on help to adopt new tools with less risk. Whether you’re curious about digital site capture or modernizing safety training, CIRAS can help guide you in your next step.
