Q&A with John Michel

Role: Government Contracting Specialist

John Michel
Government Contracting Specialist

Q: Tell me about your job and how it contributes to the overall goals of CIRAS to help companies prosper.

I am referred to as a Government Contract Specialist, however, I feel counselor is more appropriate for what we do on the APEX Accelerator team. The reason being is we counsel our clients on how to navigate government contracting to make it easier for them to break into that market. Contracting with the government is not always so black and white, and the APEX team is here to help our clients go step by step to ensure they have all the resources they need to be successful. The goal at CIRAS is to help Iowa companies prosper, and we are just one more asset that they have to make that happen.

Q: What skills or experiences have prepared you for this job?

My eight years in the military, combined with a degree in Supply Chain Management and over seven years in ISU Procurement, have equipped me with valuable skills to assist clients in navigating government contracts. The language in this field is often unclear, but my experiences enable me to help clients decipher what is necessary for success in government contracting.

Q: What types of companies do you work with?

There really is no limit to the types of companies that I work with. I have clients who work in manufacturing, construction, hospitality, and many more. I am always open to talking with anyone, learning about their business and how they can bring value to the Government and Defense Industrial Bases.

Q: What opportunities for advancement are available for companies by working with CIRAS?

Since I joined CIRAS in May, I have learned there are more opportunities available to companies than there is room to put here. Honestly, the number of resources available through CIRAS is amazing, and I am always telling anyone I come in contact with to reach out and explore what we at CIRAS can do for them.

Q: How do you stay updated on the latest developments or trends in manufacturing/government contracting?

There are many resources that the APEX team has for us to stay updated. We are part of the NAPEX community called the National APEX Accelerator Alliance. NAPEX organizes training for all APEX counselors nationwide. These training events ensure government contracting specialists stay informed about any changes, trends, and needs in government contracting to better assist businesses seeking help.

Q: What is the best part of your job?

Meeting people and learning about their companies. I enjoy connecting with clients and building relationships so they know I have their best interests at heart. I want to see them succeed by providing as much assistance as possible and as many resources as they need to reach their goals.
