Kinetic Technologies, L.L.C., partnered with the CIRAS to plan its move into a larger facility designed to support continued growth. Through a structured, data-driven process, CIRAS helped the company evaluate multiple layout options and determine which configuration would best improve efficiency, safety, and flexibility for the future.
Company Overview
Kinetic Technologies, L.L.C., located in Algona, is a small but rapidly growing advanced manufacturing company that provides custom automation solutions and precision fabrication. Known for its innovative design work and commitment to quality, the company has earned a strong reputation as a trusted partner in the manufacturing community.
Situation
As demand for its products continued to rise, Kinetic Technologies needed more space than its 2,996-square-foot facility could provide. The team was planning to build a 12,000-square-foot space and wanted to ensure the new layout would enhance production flow, improve safety, and accommodate future growth. To make an informed decision, Kinetic turned to Derek Thompson, CIRAS Strategic Advisor, for guidance in facility planning and design.
Solution
CIRAS Project Manager, Hory Chikez began by visiting the site to document production workflows, key equipment, material handling needs, and an activity relationship chart. Using that information, the CIRAS team created two complete facility layout scenarios to guide decision-making on the design and location of the new facility. Both layouts were modeled in 3D, so Kinetic could visualize equipment placement, project flow, and workspace use. CIRAS then analyzed material movement and activity relationships to identify bottlenecks and safety concerns. Each scenario was refined with input from Kinetic staff until the company had clear, actionable plans for both options. The chosen layout created room for process improvements and better traffic flow, allowing a phased approach with capacity for future expansion.
Results
The collaboration provided Kinetic Technologies with a detailed roadmap for its relocation, including a clear vision for how to set up the new facility efficiently and safely. The expansion is expected to help create 12 new jobs, retain 14 existing positions, and generate an estimated $104,000 in annual labor and overhead savings. The expansion also supports approximately $1.2 million in new capital investment, positioning Kinetic to take on larger and more complex projects in the years ahead.
“We really appreciate the work CIRAS has done; we now have a map for our new facility,” said Betsy Barglof of Kinetic Technologies. “Thanks again for your work on this project.”
This project demonstrates how CIRAS helps Iowa manufacturers make informed decisions about facility investments.
