National Carwash Solutions (NCS), a manufacturer based in Grimes, Iowa, partnered with CIRAS to evaluate wearable exoskeleton technology to reduce physical strain in production roles. The company has since purchased three units to improve worker comfort, productivity, and retention.
Company Overview
National Carwash Solutions (NCS) is headquartered in Grimes, Iowa, and employs 150 people. Since 1973, the company has specialized in automated carwash equipment and installation services, helping clients build and maintain high-performance carwash systems nationwide.
Situation
Employees at NCS’s manufacturing facility were experiencing discomfort during material-handling tasks. Over time, repetitive strain can reduce productivity, lead to injuries, and impact employee retention. Company leaders were interested in exploring wearable technologies to support worker health and performance but needed a low-risk way to evaluate their options.
Solution
NCS partnered with CIRAS to pilot the HeroWear Apex 2 exoskeleton. CIRAS coordinated a one-week trial, during which two employees tested the equipment on site.
One laser operator wore the exoskeleton for the full week. Initially skeptical, he later said he would use it regularly and estimated it would help with 25 to 30 percent of his tasks. A second operator wore the device for two days before being called to jury duty but also expressed interest in using it for specific jobs. CIRAS provided hands-on training and support throughout the pilot.
“It was very helpful to have a chance at trialing the exoskeleton suits before purchase and have CIRAS work with us onsite for training,” said Jarod Shell, director of plant operations at NCS. “This process provided us the information needed to purchase and further evaluate how this technology can be useful to us at NCS.”
Results
Following the successful pilot, NCS purchased three HeroWear Apex 2 exoskeletons and began training employees on how to use them properly. The technology is expected to reduce strain, increase comfort, and support a healthier, more engaged workforce.
CIRAS helps Iowa companies like NCS explore innovative and practical technologies through no-risk pilots and one-on-one support. These services make it easier to adopt solutions that protect people and improve productivity.
